It's not that there's a serious risk of impact; the principle of the thing is presumably to prove that we could do it if we had to. The fact that the asteroid in question has a remote chance of coming relatively close to the Earth lends the mission some semblance of practicality, but I doubt anyone involved believes that's the point.
