Lifting my 94 chevy. what do i need to know?

Ok i have no clue how to lift it but im a handyman so i think i can do it. Do i just need a kit or willi need like a new axel rod cuz its a RWD i wnat a suspension lift not body lift. How much would it cost for everything if i do it my self or if i get someone to do it for me. and i take it to a car specialties shop for that right not a body shop? an dhow much would hydrolics cost? o yea and i want maybe 6" lift
